Homestake Mine pit
The Homestake deposit was discovered in 1876. Over the years it has become the largest and deepest gold mine in North America. With a depth of 8,000 feet, it has produced more than 70 cubic meters of pure gold - a cube roughly 13.5 feet on a side. The mine ceased production in 2002 and since has been used for scientific research.
